ORCHIDS
Phalaenopsis Orchids When Flowering Has
Finnish
when the flowers finish what do I do with the old flower spike ?
as per the pictures the flower spikes have what are called growth nodes this is the bamboo looking joints/bumps along the flower stem. Over the years we have found that if you cut about 2cm above one of the nodes there is a 80% chance that two things will happen.
-
A new plant or keiki will develop(keiki is a term used for a small plant that has grown from the side of the parent plant not as a division) if this happens leave the baby plant to develop in size and then remove and pot as you would normally
-
a smaller flower spike will develop and this dose not seem to upset the development of next seasons new flower spike
hear is some pictures of what to do and what happens
We cut above the second node under where the first flower was
